10 Facts About Sloths FOR KIDS

  1. Wild sloths are mammals that look like monkeys; However, they are more closely related to armadillos and anteaters.
  2. There are two different types of sloths, two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths, and six species.
  3. Their natural habitats are tropical forests of Central and South America.
  4. Sloth fur is very interesting. A whole ecosystem of different types of algae, fungi, moths and insects lives there.
  5. Sloths sleep about 15 hours a day.
  6. They are leaf eaters, meaning they feed primarily on leaves, fruit, and tree sap, and their digestion can take days or weeks to complete.

They may be slow, but sloths are interesting too.
  1. Sloths have a very low metabolism and body temperature, so they require little food.
  2. Sloths only poop once a week.
  3. Their weak hind legs and long arms make it almost impossible to stand on all fours, but sloths are very good swimmers.
  4. Sloths eat, sleep, rest, mate and even give birth in the trees. They spend most of their lives hanging in trees!
