Instead of baking your pizza in the oven, why not try making pizza on the grill? The Grill pizza recipe is super easy and adds a unique flavor to a familiar dish. With a char on the crust and delicious melt-in-your-mouth cheese, you’ll be amazed at how much you love pizza this way. It’s one of my favorite dinners on hot summer evenings.

A simple and family-friendly meal

If you have kids who love helping out with dinner, this would be a great meal to cook together! They can help add the sauce and cheese and choose their favorite toppings. Sometimes I even like to separate the pizza dough so everyone can create their own! It makes dinner a really fun experience for all of us. We also like to make pizza bagels!

How to make this BBQ Pizza Recipe

Although this recipe is made from store-bought ingredients, nothing beats the flavor of cooking it on a hot grill. It takes less than 30 minutes to prepare dinner, giving everyone more time to eat. Plus, you’re in control of the toppings! You can add your favorite meats and veggies or keep it as plain cheese!

What you need to make grilled pizza

  • Pizza Dough – Homemade or store-bought will work.
  • Pizza Sauce – Choose your favorite brand.

  • Pizza Toppings – You can choose from pepperoni, sausage, ham, peppers, olives, peppers, red onions, etc. Whatever you prefer!

Instructions for cooking pizza on the grill

Step 1

Prepare your grill by preheating it to high heat. This gives your pizza dough a great color and crispiness.

Using a rolling pin, roll out your pizza dough into a circle as round as possible. Make sure it’s only about ¼ inch thick.

Bake your dough for 2-3 minutes on each side. Place directly on the cooking grates to preserve the char and grill marks on the underside of the crust, no need to use a pizza stone on the grill. Remove from the grill when both sides are done and some nice grill marks appear.

Spread your sauce evenly over the dough, being careful to leave a small border without any sauce.

Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the sauce, then add your desired toppings.

Put your pizza back on the grill and close the lid. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Repeat the process if you decide to divide the dough and make smaller pizzas.

I would not recommend freezing the leftovers. It can negatively affect the texture of the pizza dough, making it dry and chewy.

If you add meat, vegetables, or both, be sure to watch the pizzas closely. The meat will take a little longer to brown, while the vegetables will cook faster. You’ll want to make sure you don’t overcook things like mushrooms, as they’ll cook up and get mushy quickly.

Yes! Thin slices of fresh mozzarella are delicious on grilled pizza! I highly recommend adding fresh basil leaves for an authentic and delicious Italian flavor.

  • 1 pound pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce

  • 2 cups grated mozzarella cheese

  • Topping of your choice: sausage, pepperoni, vegetables, etc


    1. Preheat the grill to high heat.
    2. Roll and stretch the dough into a round shape about 1/4 inch thick.
    3. Place the dough directly onto the cooking grates and bake for 2-3 minutes on each side, until lightly charred and crispy.
    4. Remove the pizza crust from the grill and place it on a baking sheet or pizza peel.
    5. Spread the pizza sauce over the base, leaving a small border free
    6. Sprinkle grated mozzarella cheese over the sauce
    7. Add the toppings you want
    8. Place the pizza back on the grill, close the lid and bake for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the toppings are lightly browned
    9. Remove the pizza from the grill and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
    10. Repeat the process for each pizza
    11. Store leftovers in the fridge


For smaller pizzas, divide the pizza dough into 2-4 equal portions depending on how big you want your pizzas to be.
