Heracles and the myth of the Nemean lion

A long, long time ago in ancient Greece there was a great man named Heracles. He was one of the many sons of Zeus, king of the Greek gods. Heracles was known for his strength and the twelve labors he accomplished. The first task he had to fulfill was to kill the fearsome Nemean lion!

Heracles traveled from his cousin’s home in Mycenae to Nemea, where the beast lived. After many days and nights, Heracles reached the plain of the Nemean Lion. At first he tried to kill the animal from afar with a bow and arrow, but the lion’s skin was impenetrable! Deftly, Heracles ran up to the lion and hit it over the head with his club. He quickly grabbed the lion’s neck and choked it until it died. Deciding that the impenetrable skin of the Nemean lion would be of use to him, Heracles took it from the lion and fashioned it into a cloak.

Having accomplished this task, Heracles returned to Mycenae.
