Elephant Starts E!



Harpies are among the largest and most powerful eagles in the world. Harpies are truly impressive birds. Their legs are as thick as a human arm, and their claws are 3 to 4 inches long—the size of a grizzly bear’s claws! The species inspired the design of Fawkes the Phoenix in the Harry Potter series and is the national bird of Panama. Like an owl, they hunt using the feathers in their face to focus on sounds!

The African elephant is the largest land mammal in the world. You can tell it apart from an Asian elephant because its ear is the same shape as Africa’s! The female elephants live in a herd led by the matriarch, while the male elephants roam alone or in small groups. They only sleep four hours a night and even spend half their sleep standing up. Elephants get emotional when they experience the loss of a loved one, just like us. Elephants also get sunburned, so they make sure they stay in the shade and often sprinkle sand on their backs with their trunks.

3. EMU

These large, flightless birds are found across Australia and are instantly recognizable for their size and incredible speed. Some have been clocked at 31 miles per hour! Emus are “nomads”. This means they don’t stay in one place for long and will use the food supply in the area and move on if necessary. Emus primarily eat plants and insects – but if you see an Emu vs. Weasel Ball, you’d think that’s their natural prey! They have two pairs of eyelids, one for blinking and the other for dust protection!

The stingray anteater lives in Australia and New Guinea. Echidnas have no teeth but feed on soft foods consisting primarily of ants and termites. Instead, they have a long, tubular mouth with a sticky tongue and are also covered in spikes. Did you know, Echidna lay eggs! They are very shy animals. If they feel threatened they will attempt to burrow, or if exposed they will curl up into a ball, using their spines as a shield in both methods. The cute animals are also considered to be very smart and have large brains for their size. A problem with their intelligence is that they are good at avoiding humans, even the scientists who want to study them. Therefore, echidnas are still among the most mysterious cute animals that exist.

5. Electric eel

The Amazon electric eel owes its name to its shocking abilities! Special organs in the eel’s body release powerful electrical charges. However, they tend to use only the strongest charges to defend themselves. Electric eels are nocturnal and live in muddy, dark areas bodies of waterand have poor eyesight. Instead of using eyes, electric eels emit a faint electrical signal that they use like radar for navigation, mate-finding, and finding prey. Electric eels can grow up to 2.5 meters long. Despite their appearance, electric eels aren’t actually eels at all! They are more closely related to carp and catfish.

1. E stands for ELLIS ISLAND

Ellis Island was the largest immigration station in the United States from 1892 to 1924. During that time, over 12 million immigrants came through Ellis Island. The island was dubbed the “Island of Hope” by many immigrants who came to America in search of a better life.

2. E stands for EGYPT

Ancient Egypt was one of the largest and most powerful civilizations in world history. It lasted over 3000 years from 3150 B.C. to 30 BC BC Egypt is a very dry country. The Sahara and the Libyan Desert make up most of Egypt’s area. 3. E stands for EUROPE

Europe is the second smallest continent in terms of area, but the third largest in terms of population. The European continent is home to 50 countries. Of the European countries, 27 nations belong to the European Union (EU), a political and economic union. Europe borders the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Five of the ten most popular travel destinations in the world are in Europe.

Even though “egg” is the first of many words that start with the letter “E,” eggplant just seemed to fit my family better. We all already eat eggs; Aubergine was something we could explore together.
