Fascinating facts about the human brain

  1. The brain is a complex organ that controls thought, memory, emotions, touch, motor skills, and key functions that regulate our bodies.
  2. The brain and the spinal cord that extends from it make up the central nervous system, or CNS.
  3. The brain contains billions of specialized brain cells called neurons that communicate via electrical and chemical signals.
  4. The average human brain accounts for about 2% of total body weight.
  5. A human brain weighs about 3 pounds. The brain is about 60% fat; The remaining 40% consists of water, protein, carbohydrates and salts.
  6. There are three different types of neurons: sensory (allows us to feel sensations), motor (connects the brain and muscles), and interneurons (connects motor neurons and sensory neurons to other sensory neurons).

Ain’t the brain so cool?
  1. A “brain freeze” occurs when your body suddenly feels extreme cold in your mouth and tries to respond and warm up by rapidly dilating blood vessels. This change causes sudden pain.
  2. Gray matter is a type of tissue with a high density of nerve cell bodies that allows us to function normally in everyday life.
  3. The frontal lobes are the largest part of the brain and are involved in many different brain functions, including decision making, reasoning, and problem solving.
  4. The temporal lobe controls long and short term memory, recognition, perception and processing of auditory information.
  5. Learning new things can stimulate brain activity and promote neuroplasticity, which can help maintain brain function and cognitive abilities over a long period of time.
  6. There are two hemispheres of the brain: The left hemisphere is responsible for language, understanding, arithmetic and writing. The right hemisphere controls creativity, spatial awareness, and artistic and musical skills.

Bonus Facts:

  • The parietal lobe is the part of the brain responsible for processing sensory information, including touch, temperature, and pain.
  • Sperm whales have the largest brains of any animal, with a brain mass of over 20 pounds.
  • Since an adult brain contains about 100 billion nerve cells, it is sometimes referred to as a “neuron forest” due to the dense network of neurons and their branching structures.
  • A recent study from the National Institutes of Health found that the brains of young adults process information at different rates depending on the task being performed.
  • While there are some differences in brain structure and function between male and female brains, most cognitive functions are similar between the sexes.
  • The blood-brain barrier is a protective barrier that prevents harmful substances from entering the brain while allowing the passage of essential nutrients and oxygen.
