How to make this firefly craft for kids

This cute summer craft is perfect for older kids who can use a hot glue gun. A hot glue gun isn’t necessary for this craft, but it makes it easier. Practice fine motor skills cutting and assembling this craft. Get creative and your firefly fabulous.

Supplies needed to craft this Firefly craft

Supplies needed to make this firefly craft kit - mod podge, black tissue paper and green tissue paper, brush and wooden spoon.

Instructions to make this fun and easy firefly craft

Step 1

Step 1 - Firefly Crafts for Kids - Gather the materials you will need to make this firefly craft - Mod Podge, Black Tissue Paper, Paintbrush and Wooden Spoon.
Mod Podge, a brush, craft spoon and tissue paper is what you need.

After gathering your supplies, use scissors to cut the green and black tissue paper into small 1-inch squares.

Step 2 - Firefly Crafts for Kids - Decoupage the squares on the craft spoon.  Make the black part of the fire fly and then the glowing bottom.  Use Mod Podge, a brush, and black and green tissue paper.  The spoon is held by a clothespin.
Decoupage the squares onto the craft spoon.

Use a brush and Mod Podge to decoupage the squares onto the thin end of the craft spoon. When you’re done, attach a pair of googly eyes to the wet Mod Podge and place the craft spoon in a clothespin to dry.

Step 3 - Firefly Crafts for Kids - Cut firefly wings out of bubble wrap and black construction paper using steel scissors.
Cut the wings! Make sure you have the bubble wrap and black wings.

While the firefly dries, use scissors to cut the shape of the wings out of the bubble wrap and black construction paper. Then use Mod Podge and a brush to decouple the other end of the firefly. Let it dry completely supported in a clothespin.

Fold the bubble wrap wings horizontally and secure the fold with a dot of hot glue. Attach the bubble wrap wings and black wings to the back of the firefly using hot glue. Use the hot glue gun to attach 2 black string antennas to the firefly.

Use a silver or white permanent marker to draw a smiley face on the firefly.

Variations on this fun firefly craft

Alternate Firefly craft with glow-in-the-dark yellow wings, a yellow butt, and made from wooden spoons.
This is a fun alternative to the original fire fly boat.
  • If desired, glue a loop of black yarn to the back of the firefly for use as a Christmas ornament this winter!
  • You can also add a magnet to the back and use it to attach your art to the fridge.
  • Plus, use glow-in-the-dark paint and paper to make your firefly extra special!
