First, let’s make our colored pencil drawing.

Our first step is to decide if you want to give your kids the opportunity to be creative and draw their own designs.

Use a white crayon and draw on the white paper. Press it down firmly so that enough wax gets onto the paper.

Top: If you are doing this with very young children, you can draw something on the paper to reveal later.

Step 2 – Add watercolor paints to Kids Crayons Art

Step 2 - Crayon Resist Art Project - Painting with watercolor paints over the Crayon Resist
Next we need paint!

Next, have your child run watercolor paint over their crayon drawing.

Step 2b - Watercolor Solid Art for Kids - Watercolor paint all over the colored pencil drawing
You can use this to send a secret message!

The watercolor sticks to the paper but “resists” the white pencil. This is when their designs will do magical appear!

Resist the Art Spelling

Crayon resist artworks can be used for learning modules.

Draw a picture of an object and write what is underneath. We did “A for Apple”.

You can have your child start by watercolor painting over the picture and then watercolor painting each letter as you spell the word together.

Resist art math

Craft math idea for kids with Crayon Resist Art
Resist art can also be used for math!

Draw objects on one side of the paper and write the number of objects next to them on the other side. For example, I drew three stars on the left side of the paper and then wrote the number 3 next to them.

  • Have your child paint over the objects with watercolor first, and then paint over the number with watercolor.
  • Next, count each object to reinforce this concept!

Secret messages in your colored pencil and watercolor resist art

Write a secret message with Resist Art!
  • Write your child a secret message and let them reveal the message by painting over the message with watercolor.
  • For young children, your message can be as simple as “I love you.”
  • I texted my older child saying I wanted to take him on a picnic outside.

Colorful name art

Make name art with colored pencil resistance techniques.

Write your child’s name with the white pencil. Alternatively, your child can also write their own name.

  • Try to take in most of the white paper.
  • Now let your child paint their name over with watercolor.
  • You can use one color or multiple colors. I chose the colors of the rainbow.

This would be a fun reinforcement to a science lesson on prisms and light!

Why we love this watercolor resist idea

This is a great way to make watercolor art. In addition, it is a good way not only to train fine motor skills, but also to work on colors, math and words. Also, these easy watercolor ideas not only teach different techniques, or rather watercolor techniques, but are educational overall.

The best way to learn is to do something fun. Also, your kid can learn different words like gradient. This can be a good practice for learning how to mix colors and what different brush strokes look like.

Also a great way to use up white crayons. My kids always have spare white crayons.

But this watercolor resist craft isn’t just an easy project to get creativity going.
