My daughter’s first pet was a fighting fish that she named Rex.
It was red and blue and followed her finger as she traced it on his bowl.
Rex was so loved and cared for that after his death my daughter could not bear the thought of washing him.
We ended up putting him in a matchbox and having a burial ceremony in our backyard.
However, something that has always amazed me is how Rex came about in the first place.
How a betta came to be in the first place.
For one, we know that these are fairly aggressive fish. You can’t share a bowl.
For another, it seems that unless there are fish farmers out there doing some kind of manipulation, these fish have to somehow figure out how to get along.
And then I found this.
This beautifully shot video shows the mating, hatching and life cycle of bettas – and it’s actually pretty cool!
Just look!
Betta fish mating video

I was a little apprehensive when the video first started and I saw the girl fishing upside down like that, but after that I couldn’t look away.
I can’t wait to show my kids this video and who knows, we might adopt another “Rex” soon.
