Homemade sidewalk chalk is fun and easy! Kids can customize the colors of their sidewalk chalk, making it fun for kids of all ages.

We love playing outside with sidewalk chalk and had never considered making our own chalk, but it was surprisingly easy and a colorful craft that we enjoyed. You can make regular chalk or use a silicone mold to make fun chalk. You only need three ingredients and a handful of household items that you’ll most likely find in your kitchen drawer. Our DIY sidewalk chalk tutorial is so quick and easy, your kids will be drawing beautiful sidewalk murals in no time!

Instructions for making homemade sidewalk chalk

Step 1 - Homemade Sidewalk Chalk - Prepare cardboard tubes by taping one end with tape.
No need to buy expensive molds. Just use simple coin rolls to shape your homemade sidewalk chalk!

Step 2 - How to Make Homemade Sidewalk Chalk - Mix 1 cup of plaster of paris with 3/4 cup of water until well combined.

I carry a set of mixing bowls and silicone spatulas that I only use for craft things like making my own sidewalk chalk!

Add tempera paint. The amount depends on the color you want. Start with about 4 tablespoons of tempera paint. Mix well.

Tap the tube on your work surface to remove any air bubbles from the sidewalk chalk.

Place the chalk on a wire rack to dry completely 3-4 days before use.

Variations on the sidewalk chalk recipe

No color at hand? You can try food coloring. Use less of it as it will thin the chalk mixture. A few drops of food coloring should be enough to get the color you want. But using a thin chalk mix with spray bottles or squeeze bottles is also fun. But that would be more like DIY sidewalk chalk paint. But homemade sidewalk chalk paint could be fun too, especially since it would be your own sidewalk chalk paint.
