Our experience with this math shape game for preschool kids

My son has been enjoying math games lately, especially when it comes to dominoes, cubes or truffle trees. I wanted to create a new dice game that would practice shapes and allow for a little creative expression.

I asked Aiden if he would like to use paper shapes or felt shapes. He chose felt. Here’s how to set up this game.

This was Aiden’s “finished” piece. Towards the end he added the big green square on the right. Notice how it hangs down from the background felt. There are no rules for processing based art.

If you’re using paper instead of felt, it can help to tape the shapes in place as you add them. Because felt sticks to felt, the shapes are less likely to shift. It’s a different story with paper—especially as you keep adding shapes.
