Ingredients for Shchi Recipe

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cabbage, grated
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 black peppercorns
  • 2 liters water
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 large tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

For the topping;

  • Sour cream
  • Dill

How to Make Shchi?

  • Place the butter in the pot, add the chopped onions and fry until they turn colour.
  • Add cabbage, carrot and celery to the colored onions and fry for about 5 minutes.
  • Add bay leaves and black peppercorns. Add water and let it cook.
  • After 15 minutes, add the potatoes and cook for another 10 minutes.
  • Finally, add the tomatoes and cook for another 5 minutes and remove the black peppercorns and bay leaf.
  • Serve with sour cream and dill.
